NSU U17 Girls Claim Inaugural MLK Day Tournament!

Topsfield, MA- North Shore United's U17 Girls continued their Region 1 preparation by winning the Inaugural Martin Luther King Jr Day Tournament at the North Shore Soccer Arena in Topsfield, MA.

The tournament provided and opportunity for several teams to gain valuable experience as they head into their Spring Seasons and included talented teams such as North Shore United's U16 Girls, AC Milan U16 Girls, and Masconomet High School Girls Varsity Team.

Alana Vecchiarello's two goals in the final, including a stunning full-volley from a corner kick, sealed a 3-1 victory against North Shore United's U16 Girls. NSU's U17's outscored their opponents 12-2 enroute to the final where they came out as winners in tightly contested match.

Congratulations to North Shore United's U17 Girls and a big thank you to all of the teams that participated.

Stefano Franciosa's Former Player Aaron Maund Selected In MLS Draft

Aaron Maund, who played under Stefano Franciosa, has been selected 12th overall by Toronto FC in the 2012 MLS Draft! Read the details below!

MLS Draft 2012: Toronto FC Selects Aaron Maund With No. 12 Pick

In dire need of some quality defenders, Toronto FC went a little off the board to select Notre Dame's Aaron Maund with the No. 12 pick of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Maund did not really shine in the combine and was not considered a first-round talent by many draft analysts, but he is a solid player with the ball at his feet and could be useful for Aaron Winter.

Maund was a four-year starter at Notre Dame, starting at least 18 matches every year. Considering how much trouble Toronto FC had on defense, there's plenty of reason to think that he'll get the same opportunity there. That he was a decent passer should help his cause, as Winter looks to build from the back.

Maund has also played at a relatively high level, appearing in the U20 World Cup in 2009 and for the U17 World Cup team in 2007.

GIVE A KID A CHANCE TO PLAY SPORTS!

Playing it Forward with Jack Rubin-U13 Boys

A member of the NSU family - Jack Rubin on our U13 Boys team - is leading a project over the next month to collect new and gently used sports equipment to be distributed to disadvantaged kids in partnership with a Massachusetts charity called Playing It Forward. Many disadvantaged kids who want to play sports can't because their families don't have enough money to buy the equipment needed.

Jack is collecting new and gently used sports equipment. Playing it Forwardcan benefit from donations of soccer, baseball, and basketball equipment. They can use:
  • Soccer balls and Cleats
  • Baseballs, Gloves, Bats and Cleats
  • Basketballs and Basketball shoes
If the equipment is in good enough condition for your own child to use, it's appropriate to donate.

Playing it Forward is a registered 501©(3) organization that provides sporting equipment to disadvantaged kids. They support organizations that work directly with kids. Here are some examples:

- adolescent girls who have suffered trauma in their lives and play a team sport
- inner city school (in Boston area) that cannot afford equipment for gym class or team sports
- kids in MA who are in an obesity program who must remain active through athletics
- child centers and orphanages from Massachusetts to Mexico

Most of the kids they reach do not have much, so something as small as a ball truly makes a difference. You can help this great cause by donating your new or gently used equipment. We have a collection box set up in the alcove near the NSU office at the arena where you can drop off soccer, basketball and baseball equipment that your sons or daughters no longer use. I ask that you look around your house and check with your neighbors for items to donate. You'll be cleaning out closets while making a difference by helping disadvantaged children be active and healthy, and allow them the opportunity to participate in team sports.

On behalf of Jack, thank you for helping these disadvantaged kids.
